The following information will help you when you arrive in the UK. Please use the links on the left for more information about police registration and bringing your family to the UK. Please read below for information about insurance and making telephone calls.

Insurance

Insurance is important and if you didn't take out insurance before you left home, then you are strongly advised to consider taking out insurance to cover your possessions and personal liability now. Endsleigh Insurance has a special international student policy, produced in conjunction with UKCOSA (The Council for International Education)

Making Telephone Calls

Public payphones are at the Train Station, the main Post Office, local Post Offices and in many other places around the city as well as in public areas of the College. Many public phones are now operated by "phone cards" which can be purchased at Post Offices, Newsagents and shops displaying the phone card symbol. Coin operated phones accept coins to the value of 10p, 20p, 50p and £1. Not all phones will give change if your call costs less than the coins inserted. Calls are charged at different rates according to the time of day they are made. Look up in the telephone directory what time is the most economical period to make a call overseas. All calls in the UK and direct dialled calls to Europe and North America are cheaper Monday to Friday from 18.00 - 08.00 hours and all day Saturday and Sunday. The code for overseas calls is 00 followed by the country code, area code and local number.

Starting your studies

You are likely to have experienced some, if not all, of the teaching/study methods used at the College during your previous education. However, some students find that they are expected to take far more responsibility for involvement in the teaching and learning processes than they have done in their studies
back home. This is reflected in the balance of tutor-led and independent study you will undertake in your study. You will be guided in your studies, but rarely told 'what to learn'. This helps you to become an independent learner and develop the skills you need for a successful
career.
